Parenting Through Separation

A prerequisite to making an on-notice (non-urgent) Application under the Care of Children Act to the Family Court is to have completed a Parenting Through Separation course within the previous two years.

Parenting Through Separation is a course funded through the Ministry of Justice. This free four-hour information programme is aimed at parents who are separated or separating.  The course is child-focused and provides information for parents to help their kids through the separation process (more information here).

Courses are for adults only and may include other family members aside from parents, such as grandparents for example.  The programme highlights the advantages of parents reaching agreement for themselves in the arrangements for their children.

Parenting Through Separation courses are run by qualified programme leaders. The groups are small and the programme is usually broken into two sessions of about two hours. These can be held on different days or on the same day.  The sessions offer a mix of advice, discussion and practical examples.  Participants can choose how much they say about themselves or their situation.
The Parenting Through Separation contract was renegotiated in mid-2015. You can find your local course provider by visiting the Ministry of Justice website.
The programme’s contents include:
  • How separation affects children
  • What children need during separation
  • Talking with children
  • Talking with ex-partners about arrangements for the children
  • Keeping children away from arguments
The video above provides a good insight into the Parenting Through Separation course.
